Why Do I Feel Anxious at Night?

Nighttime anxiety is incredibly common — and there's a biological reason for it. During the day, your brain is occupied with tasks and distractions. At night, when everything gets quiet, your mind finally has space to process everything you've been avoiding. All those worries you pushed aside? They show up at bedtime.
Possible causes
1. The 'quiet mind' effect — daytime distractions are gone, leaving room for worry to rush in
2. Cortisol rhythm disruption from stress, keeping your stress hormones elevated when they should be dropping
3. Screen time before bed stimulating your brain when it should be winding down
4. Anticipatory anxiety about tomorrow — deadlines, social situations, decisions
5. Caffeine consumed too late in the day (it stays in your system 6+ hours)
6. A pattern of using bedtime as 'processing time' because you're too busy during the day to think
When to be concerned
If nighttime anxiety is causing chronic insomnia, if you're relying on substances to fall asleep, or if panic attacks are happening at night — talk to a professional.
What you can do right now
1. Create a 'worry window' earlier in the evening. Spend 15 minutes writing down everything on your mind, then close the notebook. Give your brain permission to stop.
2. No screens 30 minutes before bed. Read, stretch, journal. Your brain needs a runway to land on sleep.
3. Try the 'body scan' technique: mentally move from toes to head, tensing and releasing each muscle group. It redirects your brain from thoughts to sensations.
4. Keep a notepad by your bed. When a thought won't let go, write it down. Your brain can release it once it knows it won't be forgotten.
5. Cut caffeine after 2 PM. Even if you think it doesn't affect you, your nervous system may disagree.
