Fear

You feel an intense alarm signal telling you that something dangerous or threatening is nearby. Fear is your body's oldest protection system — it's trying to keep you safe. Sometimes it's responding to real danger, and sometimes it's firing at things that only feel dangerous.

What does fear feel like in your body?

  • •Freeze response — feeling paralyzed or stuck
  • •Rapid heartbeat and shallow, fast breathing
  • •Cold sweat or clammy hands
  • •Wide eyes and heightened senses

Common triggers

  • •Facing something unknown or unpredictable
  • •Being in a situation that reminds you of past pain
  • •Taking a big risk like a new job, move, or relationship
  • •Physical danger or feeling unsafe in your environment

Journaling prompts for when you feel fear

  1. What are you most afraid of right now, and what makes it so scary?
  2. Is this fear protecting you from something real, or keeping you from something good?
  3. What's one small brave thing you could do today despite feeling afraid?

Healthy ways to cope with fear

1. Name the fear out loud — saying 'I'm afraid of...' reduces its power
2. Focus on what you CAN control instead of what you can't
3. Take one tiny step toward the thing you fear; courage is built in small doses
