Fear
You feel an intense alarm signal telling you that something dangerous or threatening is nearby. Fear is your body's oldest protection system — it's trying to keep you safe. Sometimes it's responding to real danger, and sometimes it's firing at things that only feel dangerous.
What does fear feel like in your body?
- •Freeze response — feeling paralyzed or stuck
- •Rapid heartbeat and shallow, fast breathing
- •Cold sweat or clammy hands
- •Wide eyes and heightened senses
Common triggers
- •Facing something unknown or unpredictable
- •Being in a situation that reminds you of past pain
- •Taking a big risk like a new job, move, or relationship
- •Physical danger or feeling unsafe in your environment
Journaling prompts for when you feel fear
- What are you most afraid of right now, and what makes it so scary?
- Is this fear protecting you from something real, or keeping you from something good?
- What's one small brave thing you could do today despite feeling afraid?
Healthy ways to cope with fear
1. Name the fear out loud — saying 'I'm afraid of...' reduces its power
2. Focus on what you CAN control instead of what you can't
3. Take one tiny step toward the thing you fear; courage is built in small doses
