Shame
You feel fundamentally flawed — not just that you did something bad, but that you ARE bad. Shame is the most isolating emotion because it makes you want to hide and disappear. It whispers that if people saw the real you, they'd leave. It's lying, but it feels incredibly real.
What does shame feel like in your body?
- •Face burning, blushing, wanting to disappear
- •Hunching your shoulders and making yourself smaller
- •Nausea or a sick feeling in your stomach
- •Avoiding eye contact and wanting to hide
Common triggers
- •Making a mistake publicly or being called out
- •Feeling like you don't measure up to expectations
- •Past experiences where you were humiliated or criticized
- •Struggling with something that seems easy for everyone else
Journaling prompts for when you feel shame
- What's the shame story you carry, and when did it start?
- If your best friend had the same 'flaw' you're ashamed of, what would you tell them?
- What would change in your life if you stopped believing you're not enough?
Healthy ways to cope with shame
1. Share your shame with someone safe — shame dies in the light of connection
2. Separate behavior from identity: 'I did something bad' is different from 'I am bad'
3. Talk back to shame like it's a bully; challenge its narrative with evidence
