Guilt
You feel the weight of believing you've done something wrong or let someone down. Unlike shame, guilt is about your actions, not your identity. It's your moral compass saying 'hey, that didn't align with who you want to be.' It's uncomfortable, but it can actually be useful.
What does guilt feel like in your body?
- •A gnawing, uncomfortable feeling in your stomach
- •Tightness in your chest
- •Difficulty making eye contact
- •Replaying the situation over and over in your mind
Common triggers
- •Hurting someone you care about, even unintentionally
- •Not showing up the way you wanted to
- •Saying no to someone and feeling bad about it
- •Taking time for yourself when others need you
Journaling prompts for when you feel guilt
- Is this guilt telling me something important, or is it just people-pleasing talking?
- What can I actually do to make this right, and what's beyond my control?
- Am I holding myself to a standard I'd never expect from anyone else?
Healthy ways to cope with guilt
1. If you genuinely messed up, apologize sincerely and make amends
2. Check if it's real guilt or 'false guilt' — are you actually responsible, or just being too hard on yourself?
3. Forgive yourself the way you'd forgive someone you love
