Adult life is full of responsibilities that can crowd out the question of how you are actually doing. These journal prompts for adults cover work, relationships, money, and meaning, so you can step back from the daily rush and see your life clearly.
How to use these prompts
- •Set aside 10 minutes on a calm evening or weekend morning, away from work email.
- •Choose one life area per week and go deep rather than skimming all of them.
- •Be honest about tradeoffs. Adult life involves real constraints, and naming them is part of the work.
Work and purpose
- 1.Does your work feel like a job, a career, or a calling right now? Is that okay with you?
- 2.What part of your work gives you energy, and what part slowly drains it?
- 3.If you had to explain why you do what you do, what would you say?
- 4.What would you change about your work life if you could change only one thing?
- 5.Where are you staying out of habit rather than choice?
- 6.How much of your identity is tied to your job, and how do you feel about that?
Relationships and family
- 7.Which relationships in your life deserve more of your attention?
- 8.What friendship has faded that you miss?
- 9.How are you showing up for the people who depend on you, and who shows up for you?
- 10.What patterns from your childhood family do you notice in your adult relationships?
- 11.What conversation have you been putting off with someone you love?

Responsibility and balance

- 14.What does balance actually look like for you this season, realistically?
- 15.What obligation could you renegotiate or let go of?
- 16.How do you feel about money right now, and what is behind that feeling?
- 17.When did you last do something just because it was fun?
- 18.What would you need in order to feel less rushed?
Taking stock of your life

- 20.What dream did you set aside, and do you still want it?
- 21.What have you outgrown, like a habit, a belief, or a role?
- 22.What do you know now that you wish you had known at 20?
- 23.What decision are you glad you made even though it was hard?
- 24.What would you regret not doing if you looked back from age 80?
- 25.Where do you feel most settled in your life, and where do you feel restless?
Rest and renewal
- 26.What does rest look like for you, beyond collapsing at the end of the day?
- 27.What hobby or interest would you pick back up if you had a free afternoon every week?
- 28.What is one thing you can do this week purely for your own enjoyment?
- 29.Who helps you recharge, and when did you last see them?
- 30.What would your ideal weekend look like, and how close can you get to it?
- 31.What is something new you would like to learn as an adult?
Tips that make it stick
- •Adults often skip feelings and go straight to logistics. Try to name the emotion first, like resentment, restlessness, or contentment, then make the plan.
- •Schedule journaling like any other commitment. If it is not on the calendar, it tends not to happen.
- •Write about the good stuff too. Adult life is not only problems to solve.
