Ambivalence

You feel pulled in two directions at once, holding contradictory feelings about the same thing. Ambivalence is wanting to go AND wanting to stay. Loving someone AND being frustrated by them. Being excited AND terrified. It's not indecision — it's the very human experience of things being complicated.

What does ambivalence feel like in your body?

  • A push-pull tension in your body
  • Feeling stuck or frozen between options
  • Fluctuating energy — motivated one moment, drained the next
  • A general sense of unease without a clear direction

Common triggers

  • Relationships that are both wonderful and challenging
  • Career decisions where both paths have real trade-offs
  • Outgrowing something you still love
  • Wanting change but also craving stability

Journaling prompts for when you feel ambivalence

  1. What are the two (or more) things you're feeling simultaneously?
  2. What would you choose if both options were equally valid?
  3. Can you hold space for both feelings without needing to resolve them right now?

Healthy ways to cope with ambivalence

1. Accept that ambivalence is normal — not every feeling needs to be resolved immediately
2. Make a pros/cons list, but pay attention to which column makes your chest tighten or relax
3. Talk to someone who won't just tell you what to do, but will help you explore both sides
