Mood vs Affect: What's the Difference?
The short answer
Mood is the emotional state you feel inside over time; affect is how that emotion shows on the outside in your face, voice, and body.
Mood vs affect is a distinction you'll mostly hear from psychologists and doctors, but it's simple once you strip away the jargon. A common way to put it: mood is the climate, affect is the weather. Mood is what you report feeling, and affect is what someone else can observe.
What is mood?
Your ongoing emotional state as you experience it on the inside, like feeling low or upbeat over a stretch of time.
What is affect?
The outward expression of emotion that other people can see, through your face, voice, posture, and gestures. In research, 'affect' is also used as an umbrella word for feeling states in general.
Side by side
| Mood | Affect | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your inner emotional state | Your visible emotional expression |
| Who describes it | You, in your own words | An observer, based on what they see |
| How long it lasts | Hours, days, or longer | Moment to moment, shifts quickly |
| Example | 'I've felt down all week' | Flat voice, little eye contact |
| Common terms | Low, irritable, elevated, anxious | Flat, blunted, bright, restricted |
| Analogy | The climate | The weather |
How to tell which one you're feeling
- •Ask 'who is describing it?' If it's you describing your inner state, it's mood.
- •If it's about how you look or sound to others, it's affect.
- •Notice timing: mood stays steady over a period, affect can change several times in one conversation.
- •Remember they can differ: someone can smile and joke (bright affect) while feeling low inside (low mood).
Can you feel both?
You always have both. Sometimes they match, like a low mood with a quiet, flat affect. Sometimes they don't, which is why people can be surprised to learn a cheerful friend has been struggling.
What helps
For mood
- Track your mood daily to see patterns over weeks
- Notice what lifts or lowers it, like sleep or social time
- Use specific words, not just 'good' or 'bad'
For affect
- Let your face and voice match how you really feel with safe people
- Notice if you hide your feelings behind a 'fine' expression
- Ask someone you trust how you've seemed lately
A journal prompt to try
How would you describe your mood this week in one word? Now, how do you think you've come across to others? Do the two match?
Common questions
What does 'flat affect' mean?
Flat affect means showing very little emotional expression in your face, voice, or body. It is something clinicians note, but on its own it doesn't tell you what a person is feeling inside.
What is the difference between mood and affect in a mental status exam?
In a mental status exam, mood is what the person reports feeling, often in their own words, and affect is what the clinician observes in their expression.
Is affect the same as emotion?
Not exactly. In clinical use, affect is the visible expression of emotion. In research, 'affect' is sometimes used more broadly to mean any feeling state.
