Emotions vs Feelings: What's the Difference?

The short answer

Emotions are the body's automatic reactions to what happens; feelings are how you consciously experience and interpret those reactions.

Most people use the words interchangeably, but there is a real difference between feelings and emotions. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio describes emotions as the body's reactions and feelings as the mind's awareness of them. Understanding emotions vs feelings is the first step toward naming what you feel more precisely.

What is emotions?

Automatic responses in your body and brain to something that matters to you, like a jolt of fear or a rush of anger.

What is feelings?

Your conscious experience and interpretation of those emotions: the name and meaning you give to what is happening inside.

How to tell which one you're feeling

  • •Notice the body first: a sudden change in heart rate, breath, or muscles is the emotion.
  • •Then notice the story: the words and meaning you attach are the feeling.
  • •If you can't yet name it, you're likely noticing the emotion before the feeling forms.
  • •Ask 'what am I telling myself about this?' to find the feeling layer.

Can you feel both?

You almost always have both. An emotion fires, and a feeling follows as your mind makes sense of it. The more words you have for your feelings, the better you can respond to the emotions underneath.

What helps

For emotions

  • Scan your body for where the reaction shows up
  • Take three slow breaths before you respond
  • Let the wave rise and fall without acting on it

For feelings

  • Name the feeling as precisely as you can
  • Ask what the feeling is trying to tell you
  • Write it down to see it more clearly

A journal prompt to try

Think of a strong reaction you had this week. What happened in your body first, and what did you feel and tell yourself afterward?

Common questions

What comes first, emotions or feelings?

In most models, emotions come first as fast bodily reactions, and feelings follow as you become aware of and interpret them.

Are feelings and emotions the same thing?

In everyday speech, yes. In psychology and neuroscience, emotions usually refer to the body's response and feelings to the conscious experience of it.

Why does the difference matter?

Separating the body reaction from the story you tell about it gives you a moment of choice. That gap is where emotional regulation happens.
