Resentment

You feel a bitter, simmering anger toward someone or something that you believe wronged you. Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to get sick. It builds slowly over time, fueled by unresolved hurt and unspoken boundaries.

What does resentment feel like in your body?

  • •Tightness in your jaw and shoulders
  • •A bitter taste that seems almost physical
  • •Stomach tension and digestive discomfort
  • •Clenching or grinding your teeth without realizing

Common triggers

  • •Feeling like you give more than you get in a relationship
  • •Someone never acknowledging how they hurt you
  • •Comparing your struggles to someone else's easy path
  • •Saying yes when you wanted to say no, over and over

Journaling prompts for when you feel resentment

  1. Who or what are you holding resentment toward, and what hurt started it?
  2. What boundary could you set that would prevent this resentment from growing?
  3. What would it take for you to release this, and what are you afraid of letting go?

Healthy ways to cope with resentment

1. Identify the unmet need behind the resentment — that's the real issue to address
2. Have the honest conversation you've been avoiding (or write it out if that's safer)
3. Practice radical acceptance for things you cannot change, and take action on what you can
